Hitachi Displays Develops 4.5-inch HD LCD Panel for Smartphones
Hitachi Displays Ltd announced a 4.5-inch LCD panel that can display high-definition (HD) video with a pixel count of 1,280 x 720 Feb 10, 2011.
The panel is targeted at smartphones, whose resolutions are now increasing. The company plans to start volume production of the panel in the third quarter of 2011.
The resolution of the LCD panel is 329ppi, and the size of its subpixel is 25.7 x 77μm. It uses IPS (in-plane switching) display technology and has a view angle of 160° in the vertical and horizontal directions.
Its luminance and contrast ratio are 500cd/m2 and 1,100:1, respectively. It has a 70% color gamut on NTSC standards. Its power consumption has not been disclosed yet.
To realize the high resolution and the high luminance, Hitachi Displays improved the aperture ratio of pixel by, for example, reducing the size of the driver element inside the LCD panel. In addition, it enhanced the use efficiency of light by optimizing the structure of a backlight unit that consists of a light guide plate, etc.
The LCD panel was prototyped in the production line for low-temperature polycrystalline silicon TFTs at the company's LCD panel manufacturing plant, "V3", which is located in Mobara City, China Prefecture, Japan.
Hitachi Displays plans to exhibit the new LCD panel at the 49th SID International Symposium, Seminar & Exhibition (SID 2011), an international academic conference and trade show on display technologies, which will take place from May 15 to 20, 2011, in Los Angeles, the US.
