Sanyo Electric Co Ltd announced the "eneloop mobile booster KBC-L2BS," a lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery that can charge a mobile phone via USB connection, Aug 31, 2010.

The battery can charge the iPad tablet PC, the Xperia Android-based smartphone, etc. It will be released Oct 21, 2010. Though there is no manufacturer's suggested retail price, the expected retail price of the battery is ¥6,000 (approx US$71).

By increasing the output current from the 500mA of the KBC-L2AS, the predecessor to the KBC-L2BS, to 1A, it became possible to supply electricity to the iPad, the Xperia and other devices that require a high current for charging. For example, the KBC-L2BS can charge the battery of the iPad to 40% capacity in two and a half to three hours. The output current of the KBC-L2BS automatically lowers to 500mA when it charges a device that does not require a high current.

The KBC-L2BS has two USB ports and is equipped with two cylindrical cells with a diameter of 18mm and a length of 65mm (so called "18650" cells). It is charged by using a dedicated AC adapter or a USB cable connected to a PC.

Accompanied by a conversion adapter, the KBC-L2BS can also charge devices that are charged via a micro USB port. The Xperia cannot be charged when the D+ and D- pins, in which data flows, of its micro USB port are not short-circuited. Therefore, the conversion adapter was designed to comply with this standard.

In addition to the KBC-L2BS, Sanyo announced the "KBC-D1BS," "KBC-DS2AS" and "KBC-DS3AS as new products of the eneloop stick booster, a stick type charger. They use two AA-size eneloop nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeable batteries. And they will be released on the same day as the KBC-L2BS.

There are no manufacturer's suggested retail prices. But the expected retail price of the KBC-D1BS is ¥3,000, while that of the KBC-DS2AS and KBC-DS3AS is ¥3,500.

The KBC-D1BS has the same body as the KBC-D1AS, its predecessor, but comes with a conversion adapter for a micro USB port. The KBC-DS2AS is used to charge the Nintendo DS Lite, and the KBC-DS3AS is for the Nintendo DSi and the Nintendo DSi LL.

Sanyo already sold its business of manufacturing NiMH batteries for consumer devices to FDK Corp. Therefore, FDK will supply NiMH batteries for the eneloop stick booster to Sanyo.
