[iPhone 4 Teardown (1)] Inside Filled With Black Parts

Nikkei Electronics Teardown Squad started disassembling the iPhone 4 with help from Japanese engineers.

When asked about their interests, the engineers said, "I would like to know how Apple arranged components in this small chassis" and "How about the antenna that is being talked about?"

The teardown of the iPhone 4 was started by removing two star-shaped screws located in the lower side of the chassis. Looking at the screws, one of the engineers said, "They are smaller than any other screws I've ever seen."

In fact, we did not have a screwdriver that is designed for the shape of the screws. Because we did have time to go outside and purchase a screwdriver, we decided to forcibly remove them with a cross-slot screwdriver. Contrary to our expectations, it turned out to be quite easy.

After the screws were taken out, the back cover of the iPhone 4 was removed without any difficulty. When we torn down the iPad, the components inside were all black (See related article). How about the iPhone 4?

When we removed the back cover, the inside was filled with black parts. Because there is little extra space, it seemed even blacker than the iPad. And it was difficult to judge the kinds of the parts because they are all black.
