BCN Inc, a Japan-based research firm, announced the latest research results on the sales of 3D TVs and Apple Inc's iPad tablet PC in the Japanese market June 9, 2010.
"The sales of 3D TVs is not too bad, and the sales of the iPad is excellent," said Ichiro Michikoshi, an analyst for BCN.
The research is based on the data that BCN collected from major electronics retail stores in Japan and on the Web.
In Japan, Panasonic Corp released 3D TVs in March 2010 ahead of other manufacturers. The sizes of those 3D TVs are 50 inches and larger. According to the research results, the ratio of 3D TVs in the Japanese flat-panel TV market during the periods from April 19 to 25, 2010, and from May 24 to 30, 2010, is 0.9-1.5% in terms of sales value and 0.2-0.3% in terms of sales volume.
Sony Corp, trying to catch up with Panasonic, released its 3D TVs with sizes of 40 to 52 inches at the beginning of June 2010 ahead of schedule. Because of the launch of 40-49 inch 3D TVs, which have been expected to sell most in the Japanese market, the ratio of 3D TVs increased to 3% in terms of sales value and 0.9% in terms of sales volume (including the advance sale of Sharp Corp's 3D TVs), BCN said.
The 40-49 inch size will be the key to the diffusion of 3D TVs in the summer and end-of-the-year selling seasons, Michikoshi said. Panasonic also announced the 46- and 42-inch models of its 3D PDP TVs June 8, 2010.
BCN referred to the sales volume of the iPad in its report. In the Japanese market, the iPad's sales volume during the first 10 days after launch is about three times higher than that of the iPhone 3G, Michikoshi said (Those sales volumes do not include the numbers of the iPad and the iPhone 3G sold at Softbank Mobile Corp's and Apple's directly-managed stores).
The model supporting 3G mobile communications and wireless LAN accounts for 55% of the sales volume while the model supporting only wireless LAN explains the rest. If the iPad is categorized as a notebook PC, Apple's share in the Japanese notebook PC market increased from about 3% to 11.5% in May 2010, BCN said.
