Samsung Electronics Co Ltd exhibited a see-through LCD panel at SID 2010.

The company emphasized the high transparency of the panel by placing a bottle of wine behind the panel, which was placed in a white space. LG Display Co Ltd and Samsung Mobile Display Co Ltd once showcased see-through OLED panels in and outside of Korea (See related article). But it has been considered difficult to realize a see-through LCD panel because LCD panels require backlight.

The exhibited LCD panel has a screen size of 46 inches, and its display mode is the VA (vertical alignment) type. Samsung Electronics declined to comment on the other specifications of the panel and the position of the backlight unit.

However, when closely looked at, there seemed to be a light source in the upper part of the space located at the rear part of the panel. And it seemed that the reflected light from the light source is used as backlight.

"When the panel is removed, the inside is quite dazzling, I guess," an engineer of a Japanese panel maker said.

Samsung Electronics is known for the skillful exhibition of its products. And the latest LCD panel is probably one of the examples of such skills.
