Toyota Motor Corp, Nissan Motor Co Ltd, Mitsubishi Motors Corp, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd and Tokyo Electric Power Co announced March 15, 2010, that they established an organization for standardizing a rapid charger for electric vehicles.
The goal of the organization, "CHAdeMO Council," is to standardize a charging method and to increase the number of places installed with a rapid charger. Nissan Motor, Mitsubishi Motors, Fuji Heavy Industries and Tokyo Electric Power began to establish the council in August 2009, and Toyota Motor joined the group afterwards.
A total of 158 Japanese and non-Japanese firms/organizations, including automakers, power companies, manufacturers of chargers, charging service providers and firms and administrative bodies that support them, will participate in the council.
From now on, the council will improve technologies related to rapid chargers, standardize a charging method and provide Japanese firms' know-how concerning rapid chargers from the viewpoint of international contributions. And it aims to facilitate the use of electric vehicles (including plug-in hybrids), which are expected to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions in the field of transportation.
