Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCE) Jan 22, 2010, offered an opportunity for journalists to experience the "torne," which enables the PlayStation 3 (PS3) to view and record terrestrial digital broadcasts and will be released in March 2010.
The engineers who developed the torne explained the intention of the development and its functions and answered reporters' questions.
The torne consists of a USB-connected terrestrial digital TV tuner and dedicated software. When the tuner is connected to and the software is installed on the PS3, it becomes possible to view and record terrestrial digital broadcasts on the built-in hard disk drive (HDD) as well as USB-connected external HDDs. Up to eight units of external HDDs can be registered, and up to four units can be simultaneously recognized by the PS3.
"We are planning to make a sticker that can be attached to HDDs compatible with the PS3 in collaboration with peripheral device makers," SCE said.
With the "remote play" function, the PlayStation Portable (PSP) can be used to view TV programs that are being broadcast or have been recorded and to set an unattended recording via a wireless LAN. Also, TV programs recorded by the torne can be copied to the PSP at a bit rate of 1Mbps or 512kbps. The time spent to copy a movie is 1/3 to 1/2 of the running time of the movie.
