Panel manufacturers are putting more and more efforts on lowering the power consumption of LCD panels. In fact, they used large spaces for showing off their low-power-consumption panels at FPD International 2009.
For TV panels that are 46 inches and larger, the average power consumption to show normal images is approaching 1W/inch. A few of the 32-inch TV panels, which are popular models, feature 0.5W/inch power consumption. And there are some 10-inch panels with a power consumption of 0.1W/inch for notebook PCs.
Chi Mei Optoelectronics
Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) Co Ltd exhibited a 31.5-inch LCD TV panel that consumes a power of 16W to show normal images and 32W at a maximum. Its luminance is 450cd/m2.
The panel adjusts the luminance of its CCFL (cold cathode fluorescent lamp) backlight in accordance with image. In addition, the company optimized the design of the cell to reduce the loss of light.
Samsung Electronics
Samsung Electronics Co Ltd showcased a 11.6-inch full-HD LCD panel that is targeted at notebook PCs and consumes a power of 1.1W on average when used indoors. The luminance of its backlight is also adjusted in accordance with image. The luminance is 400cd/m2 outdoors and 200d/m2 indoors.
Microsoft Corp's "Windows 7," a new operating system released Oct 22, 2009, features the "Sensor and Location Platform," a function to make it easy to use data from sensors with applications software. Therefore, it is possible that some companies will equip PCs with illuminance sensors as standard features and enable them to adjust images in accordance with usage environment.
