Rohm Co Ltd prototyped an E26 LED light bulb and showcased it at Green Device 2009, a trade show that runs from Oct 28 to 30, 2009, at Pacifico Yokohama, Yokohama City, Japan.
It is equipped with more than 50 units of the company's middle-sized LED package, "PSML2," measuring 4.5 x 2.0 x 0.6mm. Some of the LED packages are arranged in a double ring structure to emit light from the lateral side of the bulb, and the others are placed to cover the rings like a lid to emit light from the bottom side.
Many LED light bulbs have LED packages arranged on a flat surface and use a lens and a hemispherical globe to diffuse light. However, LED light is highly directional. Though its illuminance right below the bulb is as high as that of an incandescent bulb, the light emitted from the lateral side is weak.
This time, Rohm three-dimensionally arranged LEDs so that the light of the LED bulb is diffused as widely as that of an incandescent bulb. Therefore, the new LED bulb is suited not only for downlights but also for spherical pendant lamps, the company said.
The diameter, height and weight of the LED light bulb are 55mm, 110mm and 120g, respectively. Rohm prototyped three types, a daylight bulb (color temperature: 7,000K), a daylight bulb (color temperature: 5,400K) and a warm white bulb (color temperature: 2,760K). The illuminances right below the bulbs are 52lx, 45lx and 37lx, respectively.
The daylight bulb with a color temperature of 7,000K consumes power of 7W and is as bright as a 40W incandescent lamp, Rohm said. Though the pricing on and the sales channels for the LED light bulb have not been decided yet, the company plans to release it within 2009 at prices equivalent to those of competing products.
