Before breaking down the new PS3, we had to know how much the 45nm Cell processor contributed to reducing the power consumption of the PS3.

We measured the power consumption of the three PS3 models* in three situations: when the Cross Media Bar (XMB) is displayed, when the PS3 game software "Lair" is being played and a Blu-ray Disc movie, "Casino Royale," is being played. For the measurement, Keisoku Giken Co Ltd's "Watt Checker" (model number 2000 MS1) was used.

*The first-generation PS3 with a 60-Gbyte HDD (model number: CECHA00), the second-generation PS3 with a 40-Gbyte HDD (model number: CECHH00) and the latest PS3 (model number: CECH-2000A).

As a result, the power consumption of the latest PS3 was less than 100W in any of the three situations. It is less than half that of the first-generation PS3, which was released in November 2006 (in Japan).
