Adtec Corp will release its electronic book (e-book) reader at the end of September 2009 in Japan.

The e-book reader is based on the "eSlick," which Foxit Software Co is selling in the US, but supports Japanese language. In Japan, it will be sold exclusively by Adtec under the Foxit brand.

The reader consists of Prime View International (PVI) Co Ltd's OEM device and Foxit's proprietary software. Its display features black-and-white electronic paper developed based on E Ink Corp's technologies. The screen size is 6 inches, and the resolution is 800 x 600.

The reader does not have wireless communication capability, and content data is transmitted via USB or by an SD memory card. Also, it allegedly supports contents compatible with iDoc K.K.'s "KeyringPDF" DRM technology.

The e-book reader will be sold mainly on Adtec's online store at a price of about ¥30,000 (approx US$319). The company expects sales of 50,000 units in fiscal 2009. It is now allegedly building coalitions with several firms to increase the number of contents.

Furthermore, Adtec is planning to release the next-generation model of the e-book reader in 2010 in Japan. It will feature color electronic paper and wireless communication capability. The company intends to use PVI's OEM device but sell the reader under its own brand name.
