Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K. and Nissan Motor Co Ltd announced that they will jointly develop a quick charging system for electric vehicles.

They plan to combine Showa Shell's next-generation CIS (copper-indium-diselenide) solar cell and Nissan's latest lithium ion secondary battery.

According to the companies, the quick charging system is characterized by the following three features. First, it will make maximum use of sunlight and contribute to spreading the use of perfect zero-emission electric cars with which exhaust fumes such as CO2 are not emitted not only when they are running but also when electricity is being generated for them.

Second, a charging station with the system can be used as an emergency evacuation area for local residents because it can supply power by using Li-ion secondary batteries in case of power outage. Third, the system can be introduced even when the contract demand is small; therefore, the load on the grid can be leveled.

The development of the system will be sponsored by Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Quick charging systems composed of next-generation CIS solar cells and Li-ion secondary batteries are expected to be applied to residences and large-scale photovoltaic power plants in the future.
