Sharp Develops High-power Solar Cell Module for Mobile Devices

Sharp Corp announced May 26, 2009, that it developed a solar cell module intended for mobile devices, the "LR0GC02." The module features a conversion efficiency of 13% and a maximum output of 300mW.

The output voltage is 4.5V, which is sufficient for charging Li-ion secondary batteries. This figure was obtained by a normal measuring method, which is conducted by irradiating white light with an emission spectrum equivalent to AM1.5G at an intensity of 1,000W/m2±50mW, using modules with a temperature of 25°C. The module is intended for use as an auxiliary power supply of mobile devices.

The module measures 67.5 x 41.0 x 0.8mm. Semiconductor packaging technologies were fully utilized to achieve the thickness of 0.8mm. The electrode pattern on the cell surface can be changed in response to the requirements of device manufacturers, Sharp said.

The company started sample shipments of the module May 26, 2009. The sample price is ¥3,000 (approx US$31.5). It plans to start mass production July 10, 2009, aiming to manufacture 100,000 units per month.

Sharp recently unveiled mobile phone handsets incorporating solar cell modules for SoftBank Mobile Corp and KDDI Corp (au) (See related article 1, 2). The solar cell module used in these handsets is nearly identical to the newly developed solar module in terms of specifications but not exactly the same, Sharp said.
