Toshiba Corp unveiled new models of its Regza LCD TV series to be released in series from April 25, 2009, in Japan.

The most remarkable model is the ZX8000, which uses a direct white LED backlight. With an LED backlight control system using Toshiba's newly-developed LSI, the ZX8000 can control light emission for each area on the screen. As a result, it has a high dynamic contrast ratio* of 2,000,000:1.

dynamic contrast ratio: a ratio between maximum screen luminance with an all-white signal and minimum luminance with an all-black signal when the screen is viewed head-on

The ZX8000 uses an LCD panel called "Full-HD Clear Panel," which features a glossy surface. The panel reduces the diffused reflection of external light on the screen surface while preventing light from inside the panel from being diffused on the surface, thereby reproducing deep black colors. Through this method, Toshiba further enhanced the contrast ratio that was improved by the area-controlled LED backlight method.

In addition to the existing double-speed driving function, which displays 120 frames per second, the ZX8000 is equipped with the "W Scan Double Speed" function, which displays smooth images by dividing the screen into a number of areas and blinking the backlight for each area.

The Full-HD Clear Panel and the W Scan Double Speed function were employed not only for the ZX8000 but also for the ZH8000 and the Z8000. The ZH8000 features a 300-Gbyte built-in HDD. The three models are among the first products to support Yahoo Japan Corp's "TV version of Yahoo! Japan," an Internet service for TVs launched April 6, 2009.

According to Toshiba, the expected prices of the ZX8000, ZH8000 and Z8000 are as follows. The 55- and 46-inch models of the ZX8000 are about ¥600,000 (approx US$6,000) and about ¥500,000, respectively. The 55-inch ZH8000 is about ¥500,000, and the 47-inch ZH8000 is about ¥400,000. As for the Z8000, the 47-, 42- and 37-inch models are about ¥370,000, about ¥320,000 and about ¥270,000, respectively.
