ZTE Corp has clinched a one-year agreement with Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (P1), to help expand its nationwide WiMAX network, now on its second phase, throughout the country.

The partnership is part of P1's continuous growth strategy to ramping up its WiMAX coverage for its WiMAX network in Malaysia aimed at achieving a target of 30% to 35% population coverage by end of 2009.

Under the agreement, ZTE will provide technical aid and solutions to P1 through including the provision of WiMAX equipment, network planning and design, engineering services and network optimization. ZTE said the network expansion project will involve the deployment of WiMAX equipment in over 450 new sites strategically located across Malaysia. P1 aims to expand its WiMAX coverage by over 900 sites by year end. The company has allocated a CAPEX of RM1 billion to support its network and product rollout plan over the next five years.

Since P1 launched its P1 WiMAX high-speed wireless broadband service in August 2008, the service has been available in several areas in the Klang Valley, and selected locations in Johor, Kedah and Penang.
