Nikon Imaging Japan Inc will release the Nikon D3X, a digital SLR camera equipped with a 35.9 x 24.0mm CMOS image sensor with an effective pixel count of 24.5 Mpixels, Dec 19, 2008.

The Nikon D3X is the successor to the Nikon D3 digital SLR camera released in November 2007 and has the same body as the D3. It is targeted at professional users. There is no manufacturer's suggested retail price.

The D3X incorporates Nikon's FX-format CMOS sensor measuring 35.9 x 24.0mm, which is equivalent to the size of a 35mm film. By optimizing the pixel properties, the company ensured that each pixel receives enough light and realized a high S/N ratio and a wide dynamic range, it said.

Equipped with an image processing system based on Nikon's proprietary image processing concept called "Expeed," the camera features a higher image quality, a faster processing speed and a lower power consumption. And it offers a true-to-life color reproduction irrespective of the hue, a vivid saturation and a smooth grayscale representation, the company said. Furthermore, it has a design that minimizes noise.

The continuous shooting speed at a resolution of 24.5 or 20.4 Mpixels is about 5fps, and it is about 7fps at 10.5 Mpixels. The camera supports recording media compliant with the UltraDMA (UDMA) standard and is capable of writing at 35 Mbytes per second.

The D3X employs an autofocus system with 51 focus points, all of which are effective for the AF Nikkor lenses with a full-aperture F value of 5.6 or higher.

The sensitivity at normal settings ranges from ISO 100 to 1,600. For ISO 1600, it can be set to about two steps higher (ISO 6400 equivalent). And, for ISO 100, it can be set to one step lower (ISO 50 equivalent).

The camera uses a Li-ion rechargeable battery or an AC adapter for the power source. It measures 159.5 (W) x 87.5 (D) x 157mm (H), and the main unit alone weighs about 1,220g.
