Nikon Corp will start a service to distribute video content to its "UP" media player, a single-eye head mounted display (HMD) with a media player function, Dec 15, 2008 (See related article).
The UP series was released by Nikon in October 2008. It consists of a single-eye display, headphones and a built-in media player.
In the "Uplink" video content distribution service, content will be distributed by streaming and downloading. Users can use UP's wireless LAN function for both of the methods. It is also possible to download video content to a PC and transfer it to the UP by using dedicated software
Nikon plans to distribute contents such as music clips, language-learning programs, trend information, etc. These contents can be selected by channel or category. Each channel is a set of multiple contents to which a channel number is assigned. Users can select the content of their choice by simply selecting the number, just like choosing a TV channel. The content for each channel is regularly updated.
When selecting by category, users can pick out a specific content among a number of categorized contents. The initial providers of the contents include Alc Press Inc, Brave Inc, Nikkei Business Publications Inc and Space Shower Networks Inc.
The service offers both free and fee-based content. The expected monthly fee per channel ranges from about ¥100 (approx US$1.06) to 300, and the charge per piece of content will also be about ¥100-300.

Nikkei Electronics Asia magazine is available each month free of charge to engineers, managers and other qualified readers.
