Suzuki Motor Corp released the fully remodeled "Alto Lapin" minivehicle Nov 26, 2008. The new model inherits the rounded box body from its predecessor while featuring a more spacious interior realized by using a new platform developed for the "Wagon R." The company aims to sell 4,000 units per month. Pricing starts at ¥1,047,900 (approx US$11,017).
The body dimensions are 3,395 (L) x 1,475 (W) x 1,510mm (H), and the wheelbase is 2,400mm. The height is lower than the Wagon R by 150mm. The wheelbase was extended by 40mm from the preceding model by adopting the new platform. The length of the interior was extended by 170mm to 1,870mm, while the distance between the front and rear seat passengers was increased by 75mm to 840mm.
As for the previous model, 70% of its users were women who averaged 35 years old. And the new model targets women in their late teens to thirties.
"In the process of designing the new model, there were some opinions that it should have a completely new design," a Suzuki spokesperson said. "But we decided to take advantage of the Lapin's unique design."
The power train consists of the "K6A," a 660cc in-line three-cylinder engine and a four-speed AT (automatic transmission) or a CVT (continuously variable transmission). A model equipped with a turbocharger will also be offered.
The vehicle features the maximum output of 40kW (54PS) and the maximum torque of 63N·m. The maximum output and torque of the turbo model are 47kW (64PS) and 95N·m, respectively. The fuel consumption (10·15 mode) is 24.5km/L (8.673mi/gal, for a two-wheel drive model mounted with a naturally-aspirated engine and a CVT).
A column shift and a floor shift were available for the preceding model, but the new model only offers an instrument panel shift. The hump in the floor of the front seat was reduced by eliminating the floor shift, making it easier for passengers to move from one front seat to the other.
The door opening angle was increased for easier vehicle entry and exit. The opening angle of the front doors were increased by 10° to 66°, while that of the rear doors were increased by 14° to 80°.
In addition, the "seat lifter" for the driver seat, the "tilt steering wheel," the "immobilizer" and the "keyless push start system" are standard features for all models.
