Intel Corp is developing a new Atom processor code-named 'Embedded Menlow XL" for use in devices operating in harsh usage environments such as automotive devices.
The announcement was made Nov 21, 2008, by Douglas Davis, the company's vice resident, Digital Enterprise Group General Manager, Embedded and Communications Group, who visited Japan to deliver a keynote speech on the strategies for its embedded business at Embedded Technology 2008. The new processor is scheduled to be released in 2009.
The Embedded Menlow XL was developed by enhancing the environmental resistance of the existing Atom processor. It features a wider operating temperature range and the ball pitch expanded from 0.6 to 1mm.
"It is usable in industrial and automotive purposes," Davis said. "And, it leads to the reduction of design cost."
Intel also announced that it will release the "Embedded Design Center," an online design support service, in 2009. The new service will provide analysis of performance, reference configuration and tools in addition to a community site where developers can exchange their opinions.
