AU Optronics Corp (AUO) of Taiwan developed a 2.2-inch LCD panel whose frame is invisible to viewers and showcased it at FPD International 2008 (Fig 1).
In the exhibition site, the company laid two panels side by side to highlight that the adjacent parts of the frames can hardly be seen (Fig 2).
To make the frame invisible, the surface of the LCD panel is covered by a transparent plastic lens that refracts the light emitted from near the frame (Fig 3). The company declined to comment on the thickness of the plastic lens.
The 2.2-inch LCD panel used this time is a "common product," an AUO staffer said. Its resolution is 320 × 240 (QVGA), and its luminance is 300cd/m2. It employs a TN mode as a display method. The company did not reveal other specifications such as a contrast ratio. The timing of volume production has not been decided yet, the company said.
