Samsung SDI Co Ltd of Korea exhibited a 63-inch PDP featuring 4,096 x 2,160 pixels, with a pixel size of 0.339 x 0.363mm at FPD International 2008.
One side of a pixel used for a 63-inch full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) panel is 0.726mm.
In order to reduce the pixel size, the barrier rib structure was slimmed down. Also, the cell structure, the transparent electrode and the bus electrode were reviewed. The commercialization schedule is not available at this point.
Japan Broadcasting Corp (NHK), Pioneer Corp and other companies have already prototyped PDPs with small pixels, including a PDP with a pixel pitch of 0.3mm released in October 2006. These PDPs, however, are 20 inches and smaller and are mainly technology prototypes. The product exhibited by Samsung may be the first superfine-pixel-pitch PDP with a practical screen size.
