Consumer electronics shipments in Japan increased 4.5% year-on-year (YoY) to ¥264.7 billion (approx US$2,716 million) in September 2008, driven by visual equipment including flat-panel TVs and Blu-ray Disc devices.
The Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) announced the statistics.
Visual equipment shipments rose 8.2% YoY to ¥182.1 billion. Both LCD TV and plasma TV shipments grew favorably, 21.8% YoY to 767,000 units and 14.0% YoY to 95,000 units, respectively. Blu-ray Disc recorder/player shipments reached 138,000 units, about 107 times the shipments posted a year ago, and accounted for 31% of overall shipments of DVD equipment on a volume basis.
Audio equipment shipments declined 14.2% YoY to ¥16.7 billion, a YoY drop for two straight months. Shipments of portable music players with built-in HDDs or flash memory decreased 3.8% YoY to 557,000 units, the first YoY decline in nine months.
Automotive equipment edged up 0.4% YoY to ¥65.9 billion. Car navigation systems grew 6.9% YoY to 398,000 units. Of these 398,000 units, those with a built-in HDD increased 26.6% YoY to 313,000 units.
