Onkyo Corp will release the MHP-UW2, a new set of digital wireless headphones for the iPod, which support a 2.4GHz uncompressed transmission, Nov 14, 2008, in Japan.

By transmitting music data without compression, the headphones can reproduce sound closer to the original. Compared with Bluetooth-based headphones, the MHP-UW2 can more effectively prevent the interruption of sound during playback, according to Onkyo.

Using a diaphragm with an aperture of 30mm for the driver unit, the MHP-UW2 can reproduce rich low-pitch sounds, the company said. In order to prevent vibrations, the company used diffusion material at various locations in the main unit.

The iPod can be operated from the headphones. Operations such as playback, pause, fast-forwarding, rewinding and volume control can be performed by operating the buttons on the headphones. A transmission unit connected to the iPod is used to transfer music data from the iPod.

The transmission band is 2401-2477MHz. The frequency characteristic of the MHP-UW2 is 50Hz-20kHz. The main unit weighs 105g, including a built-in Li-ion battery. The continuous operating time is about eight hours, and the charging time is about three hours. The transmission unit measures 46 (W) x 90 (H) x 17mm (D) and weighs 35g.

The MHP-UW2 is compatible with the iPod touch, the iPod classic, fourth generation and later iPods, the iPod photo, the iPod nano and the iPod mini, as of Sept 1, 2008. The headphones can be used with an audio system other than the iPod because the transmission unit has a stereo-mini input jack. With the use of a cable that comes with the product, the headphones can be used as wired headphones, too.
