Taiyo Yuden Co Ltd exhibited a high-speed wireless communication system that utilizes a white LED at CEATEC JAPAN 2008.

With a general-purpose white LED that uses phosphors, the system has a data transmission speed of 100Mbps, the company said.

The new system is capable of a full-duplex (two-way) communication, and its maximum data transmission speed is 100Mbps (125Mbps over the optical path). The effective data transmission speed is about 90Mbps, Taiyo Yuden said.

The maximum transmission distance is about 20cm. And the system features a 100Mbps Ethernet interface.

The company cited four advantages of the new system: (1) Its communication path is visible so that users can easily notice the communication, (2) its communication is not regulated by any radio law, (3) it can use a general-purpose LED and (4) it does not require a color filter.
