Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd will release six models of write-once Blu-ray disc media with 6x writing speed in order from Sept 10, 2008, in Japan.

The 50-Gbyte model, which has the largest storage capacity of the six, has two 25-Gbyte recordable layers on a single side. The disc uses an inorganic material for the recording film. It conforms to the Blu-ray Disc Recordable Format Ver. 1.3.

With the company's proprietary high-sensitivity phase-change recording film, the disc enables high speed recording with a maximum data transfer rate of 216Mbps. Digital terrestrial content with a length of one hour recorded in the DR mode, which records the digital broadcast signals without compression, can be dubbed from the HDD to the disc for about six minutes.

Furthermore, the company developed the "high precision stamper technology," "new substrate forming mold" and "new cover layer formation technology" to form extremely flat surfaces that can reduce disc warpage due to sudden changes in temperature and humidity, as well as a recording structure with highly precise grooves. As a result, the laser beam can accurately track the signal grooves even when the disc is rotating at 6x speed, the company said.

In addition to the 50-Gbyte double-layer, single-sided model, the company plans to launch a 25-Gbyte single-layer, single-sided model and a package of plural pieces of discs in order. There is no manufacturer's suggested retail price for any of the models. The company intends to produce 100,000 pieces per month for a total of the six models.
