Sharp Enters LED Lighting Business

The downlight type includes a kind with a brightness equivalent to a 150W incandescent lamp (150W type) and the other with a brightness on par with a 100W incandescent lamp (100W type), each of which come up with three models featuring different emission color temperatures and cover panels.

The "DL-D007N," a 150W neutral white model with a transparent panel, has realized 1,400lm, which Sharp claimed as is "the industry's highest luminance for a downlight LED device." Power consumptions of the 150W and 100W types are 27.5 and 20W, respectively, approximately 1/5 the power used by relevant incandescent lamps.

Sharp also optimized the fin spacing in the heat sink based on heat transfer analysis to extend their product life, as well as employing a structure to increase natural convective airflow and prevent their temperature from rising, it said.

Pricing is ¥52,000 (excluding tax) for the 150W neutral white models, ¥56,000 for the 150W warm white model, ¥42,000 for the 100W neutral white models and ¥46,000 for the 100W warm white model. The neutral white models can be selected from those equipped with a translucent white cover panel or a transparent cover panel.

Sharp's Health and Environment Systems Group, which handles LED lightings, was renamed from the former Electric Systems Group, which had primarily developed home appliances, on April 1, 2008.

"Without being trapped in the old frame of white home appliances, we would like to make LED lighting the new business pillar of the Health and Environment Systems Group," said Sharp's Executive Officer Kazutaka Ihori, expressing his enthusiasm.

Toshiba Corp and Matsushita Electric Works Ltd are also marketing LED lighting products, but "We are aiming to expand our share, highlighting the downlight type's superior luminance of 1,400lm and the advantage of the oblong type, which allows users to immediately replace fluorescent lamps with it," Sharp said.

As a starter, Sharp will introduce these LED lighting products as primary systems at the "Manufacturing Complex for the 21st Century," which it is constructing as its new LCD panel and solar cell manufacturing facilities in Sakai, Osaka.
