CBC Co Ltd released a drive recorder that takes pictures of not only the scene in front of a vehicle but also the behaviors of a driver by one unit.

The drive recorder, ZC-FV52G, was exhibited at AT International 2008, which runs from July 23 to 25, 2008, at Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

The ZC-FV52G can be attached to a rearview mirror. Two cameras are equipped in the drive recorder, which is longer than the rearview mirror. One is a camera for car interior pictures, and it is installed at the bottom of the recorder. It takes pictures as if it is peering down the car interior from under the mirror. And the other is a camera facing the windshield.

The car interior is lit by an infrared LED attached to the drive recorder.

From the viewpoint of a driver, the ZC-FV52G helps prove that the driver did not commit any fault, such as dozing at the wheel, inattentive driving and speaking by cell phone, in case of an accident. Also, the act of recording itself can be a preventive measure against those negligent acts.

The image pickup device used in the two cameras features 300,000 pixels, a CMOS color sensor and a resolution of 640 × 480. The angles of view are 143° for the camera facing the windshield and 170° for the camera looking at the car interior. They can take pictures at 10fps. There is no manufacturer's suggested price, but the drive recorder is expected to be ¥80,000-90,000 (≠ US$749-843).
