The Renault-Nissan Group announced that it partnered with Portugal's government to promote zero-emission electric cars. The Renault-Nissan Group plans to launch its electric cars in Portugal in 2011.
The Portugal's government will (1) establish infrastructure for charging stations, (2) carry out research on the promotion of electric vehicles jointly with the Renault-Nissan Group and establish an environment, including roads and parking facilities, suitable for electric cars and (3) increase public awareness about electric cars through communication and education.
The Renault-Nissan Group has been working on the project of introducing electric cars to the Israeli and Danish markets via Project Better Place of the US, which is promoting transportation infrastructure for electric cars.
The aforementioned contract was signed directly between the group and Portugal's government, without involvement of Project Better Place. It is the first time that a contract was signed directly with a national government in respect to a zero emission car project.
