The early implementation of "Dubbing 10"*1, a new copyright protection system primarily for recorders of terrestrial digital broadcasts in Japan, has been decided.

*1: This rule will enable Japanese consumers to copy terrestrial digital broadcast programs as much as nine times. Currently, they can be copied only once.

The related parties came to an agreement at the 40th meeting of the "Study Group on the Promotion of Digital Content Distribution." The study group operates under Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) Telecommunications Council.

"We would like to launch the Dubbing 10 by around July 4," said Yoshiyuki Seki of Fuji Television Network Inc, who also serves as chairman of the Engineering Committee of the Association for Promotion of Digital Broadcasting (Dpa).
