Blu-ray Disc recorders have finally overtaken the market. Research company BCN Inc found out that Blu-ray recorder sales surpassed 50% of the Japanese DVD/HDD recorder market in April 2008, totaling sales at 26 PC and home electronics volume retailers across Japan. Blu-ray recorders account for 30% of overall recorder unit sales.

As of January 2008, sales of Blu-ray recorders and HD DVD recorders only accounted for 24.2% of the sales value and 12.4% of the unit sales of DVD/HDD recorders. It seems demand for Blu-ray recorders has strengthened as consumer confusion ended after the resolution of the conflict between the Blu-ray and HD DVD formats.

BCN predicted that competition among Blu-ray Disc equipment manufacturers would intensify and lower prices for Blu-ray will stimulate demand from now on.

In sales of Blu-ray and HD DVD recorders, Matsushita Electric Industrial Co Ltd posted the largest share of 45.8% in April 2008, outpacing Sony Corp, which had maintained a share in excess of 50%. Matsushita greatly boosted sales by releasing the new "DMR-BR500" with street pricing of less than ¥100,000 (US$970) in March. A number of low-price models will be launched one after another toward the Olympic special demand from now on, BCN predicted.
