Teijin DuPont Films Japan Ltd exhibited a new film technology that projects images on a large transparent screen at Automotive Engineering Exposition 2008. The technology makes it possible to project navigation, safety information, etc on the vehicle windshield.
A special PET film interposed in the windshield serves as a head-up display screen. The PET film is designed to polarize and scatter light incident from only one direction, while transmitting light from other directions.
With this function, the technology can provide a highly transmissive screen with excellent visibility, which allows drivers to see the view in front of the car and the projected images at the same time.
The technology allows the projection on a larger screen, thus making it possible to display various kinds of content, ie, navigation screens and safety information, in addition to the existing content such as speedometer, the fuel meter, etc. Based on this technology, images are projected from the roof above the driver, thereby providing larger images in front of the driver.
By leveraging this feature, the company is expecting to apply the new technology to glass for use as projection screens in conference rooms and residences.
