Willcom Inc unveiled the WILLCOM D4 (WS016SH), a mobile device incorporating Intel Corp's ultralow-power microprocessor "Centrino Atom" for mobile terminals, on April 14, 2008.

The device, developed and manufactured by Sharp Corp, employs Microsoft Corp's operating software "Windows Vista Home Premium." The new device is targeted "not only at business people in their 20s and 30s who are already using smartphones, but also at students and other users who might use the product for personal use," said Masaki Kikugawa, representative director and president of Willcom, expressing the company's stance to attract a wider range of users.

The terminal is capable of transmitting data via PHS and supports wireless LAN (IEEE802.11b/g). The dedicated cradle, manufactured by Sharp (available as option), has Ethernet and analog RGB ports.

Equipped with the headset that comes with the product or the Bluetooth handset (available as option) made by Group Sense Ltd of Hong Kong, the device enables users to make voice calls via PHS. The users can make/receive a call only when Windows is running.

The number of effective pixels of the CMOS camera is 1.98 Mpixels, and it has a 1seg reception function.

The device has a 5-inch 1024 x 600 (wide SVGA) LCD panel. In order for the user to operate the device with the keyboard closed, a resistive touch panel is provided on the surface of the LCD pane. And a capacitance touch sensor is on the right side of the display.

Multiple functions are incorporated in a compact body measuring about 188 x 84 x 25.9mm. It is "about the size of a paperback," Kikugawa said. Weighing only about 470g, it is lighter than a 500ml plastic bottle drink.

Although Willcom did not specify the battery life because it is currently under evaluation, it lasts about several hours, according to the company. The Li-ion rechargeable battery that comes with the product has a capacity of 960mAh. A Li-ion rechargeable battery with an enhanced capacity of 2,880mAh is also available as option.

Willcom will start accepting orders from late May 2008 and plans to launch the product in mid-June. If Willcom's retailing system called "W-VALUE SELECT" is applied, the initial payment is ¥39,800 (US$394), while monthly payment is ¥2,100 (24 months), and the total price is ¥90,200.
