Nissan Motor Co Ltd displayed its electric concept vehicle, the Denki Cube Concept, at the 2008 New York International Auto Show opened for the press March 19, 2008.
The new electric vehicle is based on the Cube Cubic small car, but it only has two rows of seats, unlike the three in Cube Cubic.
Although the specifications as an electric vehicle were yet to be unveiled, it is reportedly a front-wheel-drive car with a motor mounted in front and a Li-ion rechargeable battery module under the floor and the seat. The module was developed by Automotive Energy Supply Corp (AESC), a joint company by Nissan, NEC Corp and NEC Tokin Corp. The charging cable is hidden behind the Nissan emblem on the front part of the body.
The car is equipped with an LCD instrument panel, white LED headlights, etc as electric components. The car also has a glass ceiling with frosted glass-like square patterns regularly arranged in a matrix.
According to Nissan, these patterns were designed to accentuate a traditional Japanese image symbolized by paper sliding doors, etc. The body has Japanese words such as "Denki Jidosha (electric vehicle)," "Pika (flash)" and "Pachi (spark)" printed on it.
The company announced at the press meeting that it will launch a fleet of electric vehicles not just in Japan but in the US in 2010 as part of its Green Program.
Furthermore, the company plans to debut the next-generation gasoline Cube in the US in 2009.
