Toyota Motor Corp announced that it developed a function dubbed "Navi Brake Assist." It works with a car navigation system to notify the driver of positional information on stop signs and assists with braking if the driver suddenly applies the brakes in response to the information.
The system was developed to reduce collisions at intersections with a stop sign. The function will be employed in Toyota's new models scheduled for launch in Japan in the near future.
In June 2007, Toyota adopted a function to inform the driver of stop signs ahead based on the map data stored in a car navigation system by displaying and sounding an alert. In September 2007, the company added a function to sound an alert if the driver does not slow down before a stop sign.
This time, the company further upgraded the stop-sign warning system with a function to assist the braking operation. The new function was developed in collaboration with Aisin AW Co Ltd, Zenrin Co Ltd and Toyota Mapmaster Inc.
