Toshiba Corp displays a prototype of an Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) that weighs only 410g at the 2008 International CES.

The prototype, which employs Windows Vista as its OS, is equipped with a 1024-x-600-dot 5.6-inch semi-translucent LCD and a 64 or 128Gbit 1.8-inch SDD. The dimensions are 151 x 130 x 21mm. The timing for commercialization is yet to be decided.

It adopts "Menlow," a new mobile platform scheduled to be released by Intel Corp of the US in 2008. Menlow is composed of "Silverthorne (development codename)," a low power consumption 45nm process processor, "Poulsbo (development codename)," a chipset composed of a single chip and wireless communication functions including Bluetooth, wireless LAN, WiMAX and 3G.

Silverthorne, which is designed to attain low consumption of 0.5W TDP (Thermal Design Power), aims at the running time of 4 to 5 hours by battery, Toshiba says.

Toshiba reduced the size of the main substrate so as to design a smaller, lighter UMPC. As a result, "the substrate area of the prototype has been reduced to less than half" compared with the substrate used in "dynabook SS RX series," which weighs 768g (at the minimum), released in 2007, according to the company.

It has an area a little bigger than a 1.8-inch HDD. This was realized by the improvement of the substrate material, reduction of wiring pitches and improvement of mounting methods, the company says.
