[CES] 'No Sense of Having Lost,' Toshiba Comments on Warner's Support for BD

Regarding Warner Bros Entertainment Inc, a US movie company that has recently announced a plan to terminate its HD DVD content supply, Akio Kosaka, president of Toshiba America Consumer Products LLC, commented, "We don't consider that we have lost (in the format competition)."

"We will continue to promote the HD DVD format, working with Universal, Paramount and other movie studios supporting the HD DVD format," he said.

At a press conference ahead of the "International CES 2008," Toshiba Corp indicated its sales share in the US market for next-generation DVD players in 2007. According to a US research company, NPD Group Inc, Toshiba overwhelmed other brands winning 49.3%, almost half the overall unit sales of next-generation DVD players for consumers in the last one year through Dec 22, 2007.

"In 2007, we made a great achievement in sales of HD DVD players in the fourth quarter in particular," Kosaka said. "We are extremely sorry for Warner's announcement all the more."

There is no doubt that Warner's recent decision came as a surprise for Toshiba and was beyond its assumption. It was just before CES that Warner informed its "support for Blu-ray Disc" to Toshiba at the end of December 2007, Toshiba said.

Warner is a member of the HD DVD Promotion Group facilitating the diffusion of the HD DVD format. With content companies being out of step, the HD DVD Promotion Group was forced to call off a press conference it had scheduled for prior to the CES opening.
