Sharp Corp will boost thin-film Si (silicon) solar cell output at its Katsuragi Plant (Katsuragi, Nara) from current 15MW per year to 160MW per year by October 2008. Investment totals approximately ¥22 billion.
Sharp initiated volume production of tandem thin-film solar cells with a tandem-junction structure (amorphous Si and microcrystalline Si) in September 2005. Then the company started mass-production of "triple type" thin-film solar cells with a triple-junction structure, in which the number of amorphous layers is increased to two, in the fall of 2007. Triple type solar cells feature high module conversion efficiencies of about 10%, said Sharp.
Sharp is currently mass-producing tandem and triple thin-film solar cells in parallel at Katsuragi Plant. The company, however, did not specify how much of the investment will be allotted to each type and planned ratios of their production.
