NTT DoCoMo Inc announced 23 new handset models in 75 colors Nov 1, 2007. The new models include 10 models in 36 colors from the high-functionality "905i" series and 13 models in 39 colors from the "705i" series, which is popular for its slim body and other features.
The 905i models will be released from Nov 26, 2007, while the 705i series models will be released in January to February 2008.
The 905i series comes up with six models of so-called "all-in-one" handsets packed with high functions such as overseas roaming capability, HSDPA data transmissions, 1seg broadcast reception and "2 in 1" service, which allows one handset to have two numbers and mail addresses.
The 6 models include the "SH905i," which features Dolby Laboratories Inc's "Dolby Mobile" audio specification for mobile devices, the "N905i," which is equipped with a 5.2-Mpixel effective resolution CMOS camera and can reduce both camera and subject shakes, and the "P905i," which supports "W open style" so the handset can be opened upward and sideward.
In addition to these 6 models, the company will introduce other new 905i series models including the "N905iμ," which has the slimmest 12.9mm body in the "9" series, the "SO905iCS" (Cyber-shot phone) featuring face detection technology, the "P905iTV" (Viera phone) with a 3.5-inch LCD panel and the "SH905iTV" (AQUOS phone) with a 2,000:1 contrast LCD panel.
The key feature of the 705i series is its slim body. The series lineup includes the "N705iμ" and the "P705iμ," which are the world's slimmest 9.8mm third-generation (3G) handsets, the "P705i," which is the world's slimmest (12.8mm) handset embedded with a 1seg broadcast tuner, and the "F705i," which is also the world's slimmest (13.8mm) waterproof handset.
As a reason why the company announced the 705i series products much earlier than their market debuts slated for 2008, DoCoMo's Executive Vice President Kiyoyuki Tsujimura explained, "We want customers to buy our handsets only after examining the whole lineups and sufficiently recognizing them, because we have changed our handset purchase plans."
Regarding handset prices, "As we have added new purchase plans including an installment plan, prices won't fall like they did before, where they were high only at the beginning and quickly went down as time passed," Tsujimura said.
