[TMS] Lively Component Manufacturers Exhibit Components of Nissan 'GT-R'
At the 40th Tokyo Motor Show, in which Nissan "GT-R" was unveiled, component manufacturers attracted attention of the visitors by exhibiting the components adopted by "GT-R."
Calsonic Kansei Corp exhibits a front-end module and an instrument panel. The front-end module is composed of headlamps, a radiator, etc mounted on the carrier made of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic). "Skyline" uses a CFRP carrier, but the one for GT-R is bigger-sized and higher in rigidity.
According to a body designer of Nissan Motor Co Ltd, the rigidity of the carrier has a big influence on the regulation of vertical movement and torsion of front side members. The corners where the vertical parts cross the horizontal parts are especially reinforced. The carrier is installed on the body by bolts.
The instrument panel has a paddle beside the steering wheel. It is an asymmetric design, with the meter panel and the center cluster facing toward the driver. The meters and displays are positioned in the same height for better visibility.
A "set-up switch" for selecting shift timing, damper stiffness and anti-skid mode is laid out in the silver-colored area under the center cluster. The engine start button, located beside the emergency brake on the center console, stays out of sight in this picture.
Tachi-S Co Ltd exhibits a front seat. The seat uses artificial leather "Pearl Suede" (manufactured by Seiren Co Ltd) on the central area, while leather is used on the sides and other areas.
Sides of the cushion and the backrest are bolstered to support the body firmly. Several seats used in mass-produced vehicles were exhibited, but it was much more comfortable to sit in compared with others.
Faltec Co Ltd exhibits exterior parts and optional specialized tools. The exterior parts include resin parts installed outside A-pillars, front grills and plated-tone parts for the area around the exhaust pipe.
The company also offers fuel caps and air vents for bonnets. The specialized tools are Snap-on brand limited to 1,000 sets, with a serial number and laser-stamped GT-R. The price is ¥176,700 (US$1,539) including the special jack. The set without a serial number is priced ¥75,900.
Yorozu Corp exhibits steel subframe for rear suspension. It is a 6-point mounting type in which the arm installation point is composed of two pipes.
In general subframes, a pipe on each side is bent to form a hanging rack-like structure, connecting the two. However, the upper arm and the lower arm have independent pipes on both right and left sides in this subframe.
By supporting each arm with each pipe, the lateral rigidity of the suspension is improved. The subframe itself is larger and heavier because it adopted a transaxle system. It is 25-29kg, while normal subframe is 20-24kg.
What was especially difficult, despite the fact that there were many components, was implementing the high-accuracy installation. Compared with other Nissan models, the precision requirements for parts, including those for suspension, are higher in the GT-R, according to the company.
As there were many welding points, the effect of welding distortion was increased. Precision was improved by devising die structures and jigs to solve this issue. The company also offers front subframes.
