LG.Philips LCD Co Ltd of Korea has prototyped an LCD panel targeting PNDs (portable navigation devices) embedded with a 4.3-inch display and showcased it at FPD International 2007.

Panels for PNDs "focus on resolution and luminance that allows clear view of screen displays even outside the building or the car," LG. Philips LCD said.

Medium- and small-sized LCD panel manufacturers are placing high hopes on the PND market, as Director and Analyst Yasuo Nakane of Equities Research at Deutsch Securities Inc, who has been watching the display market, stated, "Calculating the future PND market, I was surprised at the resulting demand, which is expected to have stronger growth than expected."

Given the portability, PNDs could require different display specifications from those for car navigation systems, which are equipped with automobiles. LG.Philips LCD plans to improve future product projects and technologies starting with the panel it exhibited, which is specialized for PND applications.

The showcased panel is a 4.3-inch WVGA (800 × 480 resolution) panel manufactured using the low-temperature polycrystalline Si process. Its luminance is 450cd/m2. As for the luminance, NEC LCD Technologies Ltd also presented a 4.3-inch panel with a higher luminance of 500cd/m2. This panel's resolution is, however, lower WQVGA (480 × 272 resolution).
