Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. announced that it will employ the Around View Monitor (AVM) system in the remodeled Elgrand, Nissan's luxury minivan, slated for launch in the Japanese domestic market in late October 2007.
The AVM system offers the driver a bird's eye view of the vehicle and its surroundings. This will be the first time for the company to utilize a periphery monitoring system that can display 360-degree view around the car, the company said. The technology will debut in the North American market on the Infiniti EX35, slated for launch December 2007.
The AVM system synthesizes and displays a bird's eye image of the vehicle by processing four images shot with ultrawide-angle (180-degree) high-resolution cameras. These cameras are mounted under the logo on the front grille, under the left and right side mirrors, and under the roof rear end.
The system eliminates blind spots around the vehicle. Thus, it helps the driver to grasp the positional relationship between the vehicle and the parking lines when attempting to parallel park or parking the car in a garage.
Auxiliary sonar devices are provided at four corners of the vehicle to supplement the function of the cameras. In this way, the driver is informed of the distance between the vehicle and any obstacles not only by colored graphics on a screen but also by sound.
