Nagase & Co. Ltd. has decided to voluntarily recall part of its portable DVD players after receiving a series of malfunction reports concerning the products.

The company has received 547 reports that the LCD panel frame of its DVD players changed shape or started smoking due to overheat. There has been no report of fire generation, yet Nagase considers it is possible that the DVD players catch a fire.

The causes of such malfunctions are inappropriate condensers and insufficient soldering. The inappropriate condensers are those that have smaller capacities than necessary. Such condensers are products of a Chinese manufacturer, according to Nagase.

Recovery targets are 23 models, 451,000 units of portable DVD players sold in June 2003 forward, 7,000 units of an LCD TV with a built-in DVD player released in January 2005, and 2,000 units of a digital photo frame released in January 2007.

Nagase will recover those products and reimburse the customers for the full purchase price, which is expected to make Nagase incur relevant costs of around 14 billion yen (USD 115 million), according to the company.
