On July 3, 2007, NEC Corp. and NEC AccessTechnica Ltd. announced two models of their new "Network Speax" home fax machine lineup featuring "paper email" capability that allows the fax machine to transmit data to mobile phones and PCs via email.

Just like existing fax transmission, the "paper e-mail" capability sends image data such as written texts and drawings on paper to mobile phones and PCs as attached files. Such data are transmitted in PDF or JPEG format to mobile phones and in PDF, JPEG or TIFF format to Pcs.

Resolutions of image contents sent to mobile phones are 480 x 640 in standard mode and 960 x 1280 in quality mode. In addition, users can print out e-mails sent from mobile phones and PCs like they get faxed data in print.

"We hope the lineup will appeal to the elderly and children that are not good at e-mail operation using mobile phones and PCs," an NEC AccessTechnica spokesperson said.

The Network Speax also features "fax to mail forwarding" capability that forwards faxed messages to an e-mail address registered in advance. Using this capability, users can receive data such as an estimate sheet sent to the office with a mobile phone outside the office and a PC at home, for example.

The lineup comes up with two models. The SP-NA540 (LS) is packed with one cordless handset, while the other SP-NA540W (LS) is packed with two. Marketing will start in late August.

There is no SRP, but pricing for the SP-NA540 (LS) and SP-NA540W (LS) is expected to be around 32,000 (USD 262) yen and 39,000 yen (USD 319), respectively. The companies set a sales goal at 10,000 units per month combining the two models.
