NTT Data to Launch Software for Accurate Reproduction of Object Colors in 3-D Graphics

NTT Data Corp. has exhibited ColorDesigner, software to accurately reproduce colors of objects in 3-D graphics, at the 15th Industrial Virtual Reality Expo & Conference 2007.

The target applications of the software include the design of automobiles and mobile phones, digital archives of folk crafts and online catalogs. It is priced at 3.15 million yen (USD 25,708) for commercial use and 1.05 million yen (USD 8,569) for R&D use (both including tax).

NTT Data previously developed a technology to accurately reproduce colors of 2-D images with the use of a filter composed of a commercially-available digital camera and the company's proprietary color filters. The latest product has been developed by applying this technology to 3-D graphics.

In reproducing colors on a display device, a method is widely used in which the spectrum of reflectivity of colors is divided into three bands, namely R (red), G (green) and B (blue) bands. In the latest technology, the same wavelength band is divided not into three as with the existing methods but into six bands.

Further, the company says that the software allows the accurate color reproduction of objects since consideration was given to the color properties inherent to lighting equipment and display screens. Even if the lighting equipment or display device is replaced with a different type of product, 3-D graphics representing accurate colors can be displayed.

The technology employed in the latest software is an adaptation of the technology developed during the period from 1999 to 2005 as part of the efforts in the Natural Vision project led by Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, in which NTT Data participated.

After the conclusion of the project, the technology has been jointly applied and developed as a commissioned research by Olympus Corp., Tokyo Institute of Technology and Chiba University in addition to NTT Data. In the project, colors were reproduced by using 16 bands.

The company has reportedly prototyped a system that can accurately reproduce colors in video images based also on the latest technology.
