TPO Displays Corp (TPO) has introduced Ambient Light Sensor (ALS) technology for LTPS applications. By utilizing TPO ALS technology, the ambient light intensity can be measured and backlight levels adjusted accordingly,
TPO ALS technology is able to convert on-glass the measured photocurrent into a robust digital output signal, improving the overall ALS stability compared to a-Si-based ALS systems that supply a frail analog output signal. The driver IC, after processing sensor output signals, will send data using the preferred interface, according to customer design.
ALS technology offers a leading light intensity measurement range, from <10 lux up to 55 k lux. The technology is able to subtract the ambient light signal generated by a masked sensor from that generated by an exposed sensor signal, allowing ambient light measurements from levels lower than 10 lux.
Using properties intrinsic to LTPS technology, measured ambient light signals are converted on-glass into a robust PWM signal, increasing the overall reliability of the ALS system. In mobile phone applications, ALS technology eliminates the need for a separate light sensor, reducing the cost of components and increasing design space. In addition, TPO ALS technology is able to reduce power consumption in mobile applications through backlight control.
