Hitachi LG Data Storage, Inc. (Hitachi LG) has exhibited "GGW-H20N" prototype optical disc drive for desktop PCs that supports both Blu-ray Disc (BD) and HD DVD at its booth as a reference presentation at "COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2007" being held in Taipei, Taiwan.

"We have already started sample shipments and plan volume production and shipments for the second half of 2007," a booth attendant said.

Hitachi LG also showcased "GGW-H10N" prototype BD/HD DVD drive as a reference presentation at the "2007 International CES" in January 2007. The abovementioned GGW-H20N is supposed to be this predecessor's upgraded version.

Asked about the structure and location of respective heads for BD and HD DVD, the attendant only replied, "We cannot reveal it."

The drive is capable of recording onto BD-R/RE, writable DVD and CD discs. It can also write data on a 50 GB dual-layer BD-R/RE disc. The drive, however, does not support recording on an HD DVD disc and only supports reading of it.

Its interface is serial ATA. The drive runs on Windows 2000/XP/Vista PCs. Along with this, Hitachi HG prepares lower-priced "GGC-H20N" with BD-R/RE recording capability removed.
