PS3: Opening the Box
The "PlayStation 3" has arrived at Nikkei Electronics editorial office. The box containing the PS3 measures 430 x 340 x 175 mm. It weighs about 7 kg, which gave us a feeling of considerable weight when picking it up with a hand. It might be too heavy for a child to carry. Inside the box, we first found the PS3 protected with cushioning cardboard and a plastic cover. Besides the PS3, the box contained a wireless controller, a power cable, an AV cable, a USB cable, an Ethernet cable and several manuals.
The PS3's maximum power is reported to be 380 W, but how much will it reach if we actually measure? We measured powers when playing game and Blu-ray Disc (BD) titles.
When the PS3 was switched on and left as it was (with the Cross Media Bar displayed on the screen), power consumption was about 180 W. When the motor started to drive after inserting a game title disc, it rose to around 200 W. It was 187 W during an opening movie. While playing a race game, power remained approximately between 190 and 205 W. Then we played a BD movie title ROM disc. Power consumption was about 195 W.
In conclusion, as far as we tried with the current device settings and applications, no result reaching near the maximum power consumption of 380 W was observed.
