Nikkei Electronics visited the "eMEX China" (China Suzhou Electronic Manufacturer Exposition) event held in Suzhou, China through October 21, 2006. City of Suzhou, which is 80 km to the west or two hours' drive from Shanghai, was originally the capital of the Wu State during China's Spring and Autumn Period. Suzhou City and its suburbs have become a center of the Chinese electronic industry next to Shenzhen City area.
eMEX China is said to be the largest scale IT exposition in China, but its participants of 518 companies are fewer compared to other expositions held in other regions outside China. For example, 3,010 companies (including those took part in the attached show) participated in the "Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Autumn Edition)," while 1,312 and 807 companies took part in the "COMPUTEX TAIPEI" and "CEATEC" events, respectively. Walking through the eMEX China's site, we got the impression that the event's showcase space was smaller than half of that provided at CEATEC.
One of the factors behind its small scale is that unlike Hong Kong Electronics Fair and other similar events, this event's key focus is placed on other purposes than attracting buyers from all over the world. Of the exhibitors, foreign companies, which have advanced into Suzhou, were those set up large booths. Such companies participated in the event voluntarily or requested by the local government, and aimed to enhance their component procurement and marketing networks in China.
