Toshiba Corp. has postponed the market release of its first HD DVD players until after the 2006 New Year. The company attributed this to delays in determining the licensing conditions of "AACS (Advanced Access Content System)," a copy protection technology for next generation optical disc formats.

Toshiba has already completed the development of HD DVD players and is ready to begin volume production. Forced to miss the year end season, a great sales opportunity for new products, the company will reconsider the optimum timing for marketing the new players.

AACS LA, the organization developing the AACS specifications and managing the license, seems to be currently working out the licensing details, having finished most of the discussions to finalize the framework of the copy protection technology specifications. Licensing is highly likely to be delayed until early 2006.
