Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. decided that it would adopt "JBlend" for its mobile phone handsets. JBlend is a Java execution environment developed by Aplix Corp. for use in embedded devices. The two companies reached a licensing agreement on August 25, 2005. Samsung plans to deploy JBlend in several models to be developed and launched in the future.
"It is to be the first time for Samsung to deploy JBlend in a mobile phone," according to Aplix. Samsung is the world's third largest company in the mobile phone market in terms of shipment volume. It shipped 24.5 million and 24.4 million units in the first and second quarters of 2005, respectively.
Nokia, which boasts the world's largest shipment of mobile phone handsets, ships a model deploying "iaJET" targeted for the Chinese market. iaJET is a Java execution environment by iaSolution Inc. of Taiwan that became affiliated with Aplix in 2004. Motorola Inc., whose shipments are the second largest in the world, also ships several models embedded with JBlend. The license agreement with Samsung is likely to increase Aplix's market share of the Java execution environments.
